Today's America, a police state? Who would have ever thought, yet increasingly the idea has become a common topic of discussion in a great many circles. As we officers are given ever greater, more expansive powers, we are seeing police presence, intrusion, and force grow steadily in every area of our land.

 

Would it surprise some of our readers to learn that apart from the stringent three power specified in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, nowhere else in the founding documents or original laws of our nation were any provisions made governing federal law enforcement in the sense of policing the sovereign people? This is true. For one thing, such consideration would have been outside the scope and intent of the Framers, since the reason for their gathering was to rein in - or "police" - government, not to police the people. Furthermore, most Americans would have had little need to organize societal law enforcement (at the time they were governed from within by the "golden rule" written upon their individual hearts). They were aware, and did recognize, the one essential power vested in the local Constable, or sheriff, chosen via election by the People of a locale to oversee and manage any peacekeeping need that might arise -- a familiar, well-known system adopted by the colonists long before, from the old English Common Law. Because this system has endured well, the People in most counties in America still continue to the elect their sheriffs.

 

But look about us in the year 2003, what are we to make of the fact that police of every description (and lately even military police) seem to be everywhere within our states and counties? We have U.N. global police; the CIA, FBI, NSA, BATF, and Secret Service; the National Guard and Coast Guard; State police; County Sheriffs; City police; and town marshals. What law created all these, and why? Apart from the County Sheriffs, are any of these chosen or elected by the People? No! We might ask, what will it take to bring America back to those days when the elected Peace Officer/Sheriff and his department sufficed alone? Could present day America survive, thrive, and prosper if that were to occur? Weighty questions to think about at least.

All the better if theyshould happen to be so interested that they wish to keep the video; you officers, deputies, and private citizens will have done your job well. Remember, if the Sheriffs had known and fulfilled their responsibilities, duties, and jurisdiction, the deaths at Ruby Ridge and the Holocaust at Waco would not have occurred.
